On Presidents Day, Monday February 17th, a group of 80 hardy souls marched from Wala Wala Plaza in downtown Walla Walla to the County Courthouse- in snow and rain people a wide variety of people came together with 12 hours notice to publicly show their opposition to Trumps’ illegal power grabs, and Musk’s DOGE reckless, mindless and heartless slashing of critical and necessary Federal jobs, including those in Walla Walla County. A county where the largest employer is the government sector (2023 data, Port of Walla Walla), whose wages comprised 25.5% of the total wages in the County. That’s 1/4th of the buying power. We will suffer mightily from DOGE. These protests occurred throughout the US, and are just getting started. One of the reasons is the mindless, arrogant and thoughtless termination of key positions that leave our country vulnerable and in danger.
To make matters worse, people are being terminated with letters state they are being terminated for “poor” or “unsatisfactory” performance. Or for being “unqualified”. Without any investigation, proof or due process. This lie is intended to deny people whose livelihood was terminated without warning or justification the ability to even get unemployment insurance. How mean and petty can you get? Unemployment Insurance is generally not given for people terminated for “cause” or due to poor performance (among other reasons). Its for people who lost their job through no fault of their own.
